Mossberg Goes Semi-Auto with the 990 Aftershock
The 990 Aftershock is Mossberg's first semi-automatic entry into the non-NFA compact firearm market. While the 590 Shockwave proved that pump-action shorty shotguns have a massive following, the 990 Aftershock answers the question shooters have been asking: can you get that same compact package with semi-auto speed?
With a gas-operated action, 14.75-inch barrel, and 27.13-inch overall length, the 990 Aftershock is slightly longer than the Shockwave but makes up for it with faster follow-up shots. The proprietary AfterShock grip features a rubberized palm pad to tame the recoil that comes with shooting 12-gauge from a compact platform. It holds 5+1 rounds in a 3-inch chamber — matching the Remington Tac-13's capacity.
Aftershock-Specific Features
Mossberg didn't just slap a bird's head grip on an existing platform. The 990 Aftershock includes an oversized ambidextrous safety, knurled charging handle, beveled loading port with a pinch-free elevator, and an M-LOK compatible magazine tube extension for accessories. The SPX variant adds an integrated heat shield, fiber optic front sight, and an optic-ready cut receiver.
Finding the Right Bag
At 27.13 inches overall, the 990 Aftershock is about three-quarters of an inch longer than the Shockwave. It still fits perfectly in our Shorty Shotty Bag, which was designed with enough room to handle the full range of non-NFA compact firearms on the market.
