How We Rate
We're not just reviewers — we're manufacturers. Every product we test doesn't just get a score, it gets evaluated through the lens of people who design, engineer, and build tactical gear for a living.
At Lynx Defense, we believe the best reviews come from people who actually use the item — not just unbox it on camera. When we test a firearm, we put no less than 100 rounds through it but we shoot for a 300 round minimum at the range. We load everything up and take it through real training days. When we review an optic, we zero it and actually use it.
Here's what makes our perspective different: much of what we test directly informs our own product development. When we evaluate a firearm, we ensure we are building range bags and support gear that make sense for the latest in firearm technology. When we run a new pistol, we're noting what holster fitment feels like, how the grip texture interacts with our bags, and whether the overall package works together in a real-world loadout.
Our Review Process
Every review follows the same rigorous process, whether we're evaluating a $200 pistol or a $2,000 rifle.
Acquire & Inspect
We purchase or receive the product and do a thorough out-of-box inspection. We document first impressions, build quality, and packaging before anything else.
Hands-On Testing
Every product gets real-world use. Firearms see a 100-300 round minimum. Optics get zeroed and evaluated on the range. Support gear gets tested through real training days. No exceptions.
Evaluate & Score
We rate each product across standardized criteria specific to its category. Every score is backed by our hands-on experience — never speculation.
Publish & Update
We publish our review with full transparency. If a product changes or we gain more experience with it, we update the review and note what changed.
Our Scoring Scale
We rate every product on a 0-10 scale. Each score comes with a label so you know exactly where it stands at a glance.
Exceptional
Best in class. This product excels in nearly every way and sets the standard for its category. We'd recommend it without hesitation and it likely influences our own product development.
Recommended
A strong product that does most things well. It may have minor shortcomings, but overall it delivers solid performance and good value. We'd confidently recommend it to most buyers.
Average
Gets the job done, but nothing stands out. There are likely better options at this price point, or the product has enough drawbacks to give us pause. Fine for casual use, but not something we'd seek out.
Below Average
Significant issues that affect usability, quality, or value. We'd suggest looking elsewhere unless this product fills a very specific niche that nothing else covers.
Not Recommended
Serious flaws in reliability, safety, build quality, or value. We can't recommend this product in good conscience. Your money is better spent elsewhere.
What We Measure
Every product category has its own set of criteria tailored to what actually matters. Here's what we evaluate and why.
Our Rating Criteria
These five criteria apply to every product we review — firearms, optics, gear, ammunition, and everything in between. Category-specific details are covered within each review.
Build Quality
How well is it made? We evaluate material quality, assembly, hardware, and overall construction. Does it feel like it'll last, or does it feel like it's one rough day away from falling apart?
Performance
Does the product do what it claims to do, and does it do it well? This is the core functional evaluation — how effectively the product fulfills its intended purpose in real-world use.
Ease of Use
How intuitive is it? Does it require a manual to figure out, or is the operation self-evident? We evaluate the learning curve, ergonomics, and how the product integrates into your existing workflow or loadout.
Durability
Will it hold up over time? We note any signs of premature wear, and where possible, we update reviews after extended use. Tactical gear needs to handle abuse — we test accordingly.
Value
What you get for what you pay. We compare the product against its competition at the same price tier and evaluate whether the asking price is justified by the quality, features, and performance delivered.
Reading a Scorecard
Every review includes a scorecard like the one below. Here's how to read it.
Overall Score
The weighted average of all category scores. This is the number that appears in search results and review listings.
Category Bars
Each criterion gets its own score and color-coded label. The gradient bar gives you an instant visual read on performance.
Score Labels
Every score maps to a label: Exceptional, Recommended, Average, Below Average, or Not Recommended — so you know exactly what the number means.
How We Build "Best Of" Lists
Our roundup articles follow a different approach than individual reviews, but the same commitment to honesty.
Every Primary Pick Is Hands-On Tested
Our top recommendations and primary picks in every "Best Of" list are products we've physically used, tested, and evaluated. If it's a top pick, we've had it in our hands.
Honorable Mentions Are Clearly Labeled
When we include products we haven't personally tested — based on industry reputation, trusted peer reviews, or community feedback — we're transparent about it. You'll always know which products have our direct stamp of approval and which are research-based inclusions.
Lists Are Updated Regularly
Markets change. New products launch, old ones get discontinued, and prices shift. We revisit our "Best Of" lists regularly to make sure our recommendations are still current and accurate. Every article shows when it was last updated.
No Pay-to-Play
Products don't earn a spot on our lists because a brand paid for placement. While we may use affiliate links (and we're transparent about that), our rankings are based entirely on merit. If a product doesn't deserve the recommendation, it doesn't make the list.
Trust & Transparency
A few things we think you should know about how we operate.
We're a Manufacturer
We build tactical bags and gear in Selma, North Carolina. That means we understand manufacturing quality from the inside — materials, construction techniques, and what separates gear that lasts from gear that doesn't. That perspective carries into everything we review and recommend.
Affiliate Links
Some links in our reviews are affiliate links, meaning we earn a small commission if you purchase through them. This doesn't cost you anything extra and never influences our ratings or recommendations. We'd rather recommend nothing than recommend something bad for a commission.
We Update Reviews
Products change, and so do our opinions with extended use. When we update a review, we note what changed and why. If a product gets better or worse over time, we'll reflect that honestly in an updated score.
Reader Ratings Welcome
Every review includes a reader rating system. We value your experience as much as our own. If you own a product we've reviewed, submit your grade — it helps the entire community make better decisions.
