Recently we took a look at 416 Ruger which was released in 2008 but the 224 Valkyrie cartridge is an even newer round than the 416 Ruger. This round is growing in popularity, especially in AR-15 rifles, also known as modern sporting rifles.
Overview of 224 Valkyrie
The 224 Valkyrie is a rimless bottleneck rifle cartridge that uses small rifle primers and is a child case of the 6.8 SPC designed and developed by Federal Premium Ammunition.
The 6.8 SPC was originally derived from the .30 Remington round. The 225 Valkyrie round is a necked down 6.8 bullet that is 90 grain and stable up to 1000 yards.
It outpaces the .22 Nosler, 6.5 Grendel, and 5.56 all of which use the AR-15 platform.
Purpose of 224 Valkyrie
The .224 Valkyrie was created to match or exceed the .22 Nosler round. The Valkyrie round was created to be versatile and used by military and law enforcement because it could be utilized for close-range shoots and long-range shots and achieve accurate shots.
Performance of 224 Valkyrie
This round is perfect for anything you can hunt with 6.5 Creedmoor as well as 5.56.
The 224 Valkyrie is a fast round that with a 60-grain bullet weight achieves 3,300 feet per second muzzle velocity and an impressive 1,594-foot lbs on target.
Guns that Shoot 224 Valkyrie
Surprisingly a number of gun manufacturers have adopted the 224 Valk round and created guns based on the AR-15 platform for the cartridge.
These guns often look like 223/5.56 AR-15 style guns but they do require a few different parts.
Namely, the barrel, bolt, and magazines are 6.8 SPC. You can use the bolt carrier group of a 5.56 AR-15 and just swap the bolt itself but you will have to swap out the barrel completely. But you can buy 224 Valkyrie specific bolt and bolt carrier groups.
First and foremost one of my favorite AR brands, LWRC. They make a fantastic direct impingement rifle as well as piston rifle systems.
They also have a top-notch aesthetic look overall so you’ll love the gun from buttstock to muzzle brake.
Savage Arms MSR
The Savage Arms MSR line of rifles has been growing popular since its release in 2018. Savage offers and number of different configuration options
Savage is an extremely well-known firearms manufacturer and is part of the Vista Outdoor umbrella of companies.
Palmetto State Armory AR-15
PSA might take the cake on making the most models chambered in 224 Valk. They have a number of selections
You can take a look at their selection as it is a somewhat vast selection of rifles and you’ll surely find something that will tickle your fancy.
CMMG Endeavor 100
The CMMG Endeavor 100 is a true classic with the full style AR buttstock, rail, and low profile 20 round magazines.
This is a fantastic-looking rifle and while not as popular as the CMMG Banshee series it would be a great addition to your collection.
Anything ZRO Delta holds a special place in my heart, so it’s no surprise I saved the best for last.
ZRO Delta is located in North Carolina, just like Lynx Defense. They are somewhat far away from us located in Connelly Springs, NC in the mountains of North Carolina.
They were once known as War Sport and make extremely nice looking and high-quality guns.

The extremely fast nature of the 224 round makes it a great hunting round for small game and predators, such as coyotes, foxes, and other predators.

No, the 224 Valkyrie requires a different bolt, barrel, and magazine and cannot shoot the 223 round.
What is the difference between 223 and 224 Valkyrie?
The rim diameter is the most noticeable visible difference in the two rounds. The next is the grain weight of the bullet the Valkyrie’s bullet weight is between 60-90 grain and the 223 Remington round is between 35-80 grain.
